Padilla Applauds Supreme Court Ruling Upholding Indian Child Welfare Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling to uphold the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA):

“With its decision today, the Supreme Court upheld critical legislation to protect the rights of Tribal Nations and reverse shameless attempts to eradicate Indigenous culture and heritage. By preserving ICWA, the Court has not only affirmed Tribal sovereignty – they have also prioritized the wellbeing of Native American children and families, ensuring that they can remain together and within their communities.

“This decision brings us closer to fulfilling the federal government’s promise to right past wrongs and deliver justice to Tribal communities.”

Padilla previously joined members of Congress in filing a bipartisan, bicameral amicus brief defending ICWA’s constitutionality in Haaland v. Brackeen.
