Padilla Statement on DHS Funding Deal
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, released the following statement after the Senate passed funding for all elements of the Department of Homeland Security except for ICE and CBP border security operations:
“For months, we’ve been clear: no blank checks for Trump’s lawless ICE and Border Patrol. Senate Democrats stood united and have successfully blocked additional funding for Trump’s mass deportation effort.
“Americans deserve and demand better. We have all seen the harm and the fear that this Administration has inflicted on communities across this country — rogue, masked agents terrorizing communities, detaining and deporting children and veterans, and even killing United States citizens.
“In response, people across the country are speaking up, peacefully organizing, and demanding accountability.
“Kristi Noem is out and Greg Bovino is gone. Yet for six weeks, Trump and Congressional Republicans chose to not fund TSA, the Coast Guard, CISA, or FEMA rather than meet Democrats’ demands for reforms and accountability for ICE agents and all federal agents conducting immigration enforcement operations.
“That ends today.
“But the fight is far from over.
“We’ve succeeded in funding critical agencies and withholding additional funding for Trump’s ICE for now, but we must keep demanding full accountability from ICE and CBP for their actions. Because this is not just a funding fight — it’s about protecting our communities, upholding the rule of law, and holding this Administration accountable.”
